5. Middle-earth: Shadow of War (July 2019 Xbox Game Pass Addition)

Monolith Productions’ Lord of the Rings game Middle-earth: Shadow of War is an open-world action role-playing game that succeeds its predecessor, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (which is also available for download on Xbox Game Pass).

Despite some mixed reviews from major outlets, the game received numerous awards and nominations. It currently holds a very-solid Metascore of 81 on Metacritic but has a horrible User Score of 3.8. Despite this, it still remains undoubtedly one of the premier titles available on Xbox Game Pass right now.

4. Halo 5: Guardians

The Halo series is one that needs no introduction.

343 Industries’ Halo 5: Guardians is the latest in the famed Microsoft first-person shooter video game series.

Unsurprisingly, fifth numbered Halo installment received largely positive reviews from critics. However, many gamers were lukewarm on the latest title. Halo 5: Guardians currently carries a Metascore of 84 and a User Score of 6.4.

Though it didn’t win too many awards, it was nominated for a whole slew of them and still represents one of the absolute best titles you can download and play right now on Xbox Game Pass.

3. Gears of War 4

The Coalition’s Gears of War 4 is, as the name implies, the fourth numbered installment in Microsoft Studios’ famous third-person shooter video game series. Most notably, it is the first in the series not developed by Epic Games — but that does not detract from the games obvious quality.

The game received favorable reviews from most critics, lending it an overall Metascore of 84. Its User Score, however, is a bit less strong at 6.8. If you have an Xbox One console, there is little reason not to play this game.

2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Eidos Montréal’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third installment in the new and refreshed action-adventure series and the twelfth mainline entry overall.

Like the two games that came before it, Shadow of the Tomb Raider received largely favorable reviews from both critics and users. As such, it currently carries a Metascore of 82 and a User Score of 7.1 on Metacritic.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is particularly impressive if you have an Xbox One X and a 4K/HDR capable display, as it continues the series’ legacy of pumping out some of the most beautiful visuals found anywhere in console gaming.

1. Forza Horizon 4 Standard Edition (DLC Not Included in Xbox Game Pass)

Forza Horizon 4 isn’t just the best game available to download right now on Xbox Game Pass. It’s one of the best games available on any console, period.

Playground Games have developed a masterful follow-up to the already masterful Forza Horizon 3. With gorgeous visuals, near-perfect arcade-racing gameplay, an extensive open world representing a fictionalized United Kingdom, a bangin’ soundtrack, and more missions than you can shake a shifter at, this is one game that you can easily sink over 100 hours into and still keep coming back for more — even without the DLC coming free on Xbox Game Pass.

Forza Horizon 4 is a Metacritic Must-Play and carries an overall Metascore of 92 alongside a User Score of 7.7.

There’s no doubt about it — Forza Horizon 4 is the best game on Xbox Game Pass right now.
