You may have been under the impression that Dauntless already launched in May on Epic Games‘ platform. However, that was merely a beta 0.8 launch. Dauntless 1.0 releases later this month, on September 26 — with a host of refinements and content expansions.
Dauntless is a co-op monster-hunting ARPG. Instead of slaying thousands of disposable enemies, like the so-called ‘trash mobs’ you see in Diablo III and Path of Exile, you are focusing on slaying bosses (called Behemoths) with other players.
Dauntless is powered by an addicting formula: hunting>looting>crafting.
Every encounter with a Behemoth must be carefully considered. What kind of damage and attacks does it deploy? What kind of weapons and resistance do you have? Do you rely on toughness or invasion? Add your friends to that loop, along with imaginative Behemoths, and you have something special going on.
On top of that enticing concept, veterans from Bioware, Riot Games, and other studios have gathered to form Phoenix Labs — to ensure tight gameplay. They have big plans for Dauntless, and the 1.0 launch is just the beginning.
In a nutshell, Dauntless 1.0 will launch on September 26 with:
- Seasonal Aether Unbound expansion
- New weapons
- New bounty system and Hunt Pass
- New Behemoths: Tempestborne Stormclaw and Dire Behemoth
Phoenix Labs took an extra step to craft a full road map, at your convenience. (More studios should take that approach, in order to make clear to players if their time investment will be worth it.)
As a co-op always-online ARPG, Dauntless’ storyline is simply there as a flavoring. It is actually quite similar to the plot of Pacific Rim movies, except that the cataclysm already happened. Now, you must stave off the extinction of the last remnants of humanity in a mysterious world of floating islands.
