Fortnite Apologizes for Recycling Gunner’s Model

Ever since World of Warcraft, pets have become a staple for customizing your virtual persona. For always-online games that rely on micro-transactions, pets have become a matter of in-game prestige. Fortnite has now apologized for forgetting that fact.

Epic Games does tend to incur players’ wrath from time to time. However, no one can say they are not quick in responding to feedback and making amends.

Fortnite’s item shop restocking in the last few days created quite a stir. Namely, you could buy a pet dog Gunner for 1000 of Fortnite’s V-Bucks. The problem is, that pet already made an appearance in Fortnite’s item shop in season six under a different name — Bonesy!

When you look at Gunner and Bonesy juxtaposed, you will hardly notice any difference — except in the eye color and an added white symbol on Bonesy’s (or Gunner’s) green bandana.

Naturally, many people were peeved off — to put it mildly.

This is not the first recycling we have seen in Fortnite’s store. In June, the Summer Drift skin was sold fro 1500 V-Bucks. Like with Gunner, it was simply a reskin of the Drift skin in season five.

There is not much one can do to justify such blatant recycling of already-made assets and then asking hefty sums of V-Bucks for them — and Epic Games clearly knows it.

Everyone will be able to receive a refund, even those Fortnite players who were refunded for Gunner prior to this amends. You will get a replacement Refund Token in addition to the 200 V-Bucks mentioned above.

So far, Fortnite has been a huge boon for Epic Games — which has put its money to good use.

However, if such blunders continue, they may erode the company’s lucrative micro-transaction model in the future. Keep in mind that people buy items to stand out from the crowd — to be exclusive! Nothing is further removed from exclusivity than a barely noticeable tweaking of earlier shop items.
