Three long years after it was announced at Mech Con 2016, Piranha Games finalized the development of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and has provided a launch trailer.
It is hard to believe that MechWarrior 4: Vengeance was released 19 years ago! Of course, not everything Battletech Universe related had been dry during that span. The most notable forays into the rich world of factions and giant mechanical beasts were BattleTech from Harebrained Schemes, and MechWarrior Online from Piranha Games — as they simultaneously worked on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.
However, both BattleTech and MechWarrior Online did not combine three key elements that make veteran MechWarrior fans happy:
- A first-person perspective
- Base/mech/economy management
- A single-player focus
Finally, MechWarrior 5 is all about a story-driven experience, set in the Third Succession War.
There is a lot to be excited about MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. It is made in the fantastic Unreal Engine 4, thus forgoing the clunky CryEngine from the beleaguered CryTek. It has full support for VR headsets, which comes in no small part from the continued development of Unreal Engine 4. It has a four-player co-op with AI spot-filling, and the game continues the excellent MechWarrior Online battle simulation and gameplay mechanics.
As the title suggests, you will run a company of mercenaries with all the management we love so much: upgrading and repairing mechs, hiring new pilots, choosing which missions are appropriate for a particular combo of mechs and pilots, and maximizing your salvage potential. The enemies you will have to tackle in order to successfully complete missions will be other mechs, military vehicles, and various stationary planetary defenses.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, for the time being, will be exclusive to Epic Games Store — which is not surprising, as Epic is becoming a one-stop station for many game developers by offering them outstanding Unreal Engine 4, digital shop, and direct incentives.
