Sony has unveiled its two free monthly PS4 offerings for PlayStation Plus subscribers for the month of July 2019. The free downloads for next month are PES 2019: Pro Evolution Soccer and Horizon Chase Turbo.
Though there are some complaints — per usual — about July’s free PlayStation Plus games from Sony, the games really aren’t bad. In fact, they’re quite good.
PES 2019: Pro Evolution Soccer on PlayStation Plus
PES 2019: Pro Evolution Soccer is one of the finer sports game available, period. In many ways, it is superior to the more famous FIFA-branded offering — thanks to its focus on a more realistic and ‘heavy’ playing experience versus the latter’s faster and more-arcadey feel.
In my experience with the Pro Evo franchise, I have always found that individual players ‘feel’ more like their real-life counterparts actually perform on the pitch. There’s a weightier nature to the game, which makes the act of bringing on a pacey player like Chelsea’s Willian late in the second half of a match an actual ‘game changer’ against larger defenders with tired legs.
The PlayStation 4 version of PES 2019 holds a respectable 79 Metascore on review aggregator Metacritic. Still, critics prefer FIFA 19, which has a Metascore of 83. Users seemingly prefer PES 2019, however, giving it a 6.5 User Score against FIFA’s 1.7 — a number which is admittedly so low that it’s suspect.
Our only real complaint with PES 2019 being on offer as one of July 2019’s free PS Plus games is that club football/soccer season is over, so the game is at end of its life cycle before the next in the series is released.
Horizon Chase Turbo
Horizon Chase Turbo is also a solid offering, particularly for a wingman to PES 2019. It has a MetaScore of 77 and a User Score of 7.8 on the PlayStation 4, though it also has strong reviews on other platforms. It has “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, 93 percent of Google users liked the video game, and it has a MetaScore/User Score of 82/8.2 on the Nintendo Switch.
