Beginning next year, Sunless Skies: Sovereign will become available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. PC owners of the game will have the Sovereign Edition for free.
A successor to the acclaimed survival rogue-like Sunless Sea, Sunless Skies continues the grim-dark steampunk adventures.
The gameplay loop remains the same:
- manage crew
It sounds simple and FTL-like, but only when you play Sunless Skies can one appreciate its unique charm. Its eldritch atmosphere, writing, characters, and environments are features of their own and worthy of experiencing — not to mention a massive amount of content it offers to explore.
Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition will further refine the addicting formula as it branches to consoles with more flexibility when dealing with a starving crew., a revamped user interface for character progression, new facets for your captain’s background, a new exotic engine to upgrade your ship, and expanded trading options.
Sunless Skies has only been out since the beginning of this year, yet the Sovereign Edition seems to finalize its original vision. Given the modular nature of rogue-like games, it remains to be seen if it will receive further content updates.
As for console porting, the developers promise “smooth and intuitive play using a controller.”
Except for the official news, the Sovereign Edition is not yet listed on Steam but will become available sometime in the first half of 2020.
In the meantime, if you are interested in top-notch writing and mysterious worlds to explore, consider getting the Sunless Sea + Skies bundle. Reviews are still divided into deciding which one is “better,” so it is best to consider them as different takes on this unique steampunk universe. The bundle may receive a heavy discount as the Sovereign Edition nears its release date.
