The Outer Worlds Reveals Monarch in New Trailer

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds — Obsidian’s most ambitious original project since Alpha Protocol — has released a new trailer that reveals what you can do on one of its worlds, Monarch.

It’s hard not to like Obsidian Entertainment. As a moderately-sized gaming studio, they have struggled to make huge commercial successes — but they’ve always brought something new to the table.

Fallout: New Vegas is still unmatched in all the ways you can play it, the way you interact with the factions, and how much you can influence the ending. Player choice and emotional engagement have always been an imperative focus in most Obsidian games — the latest ones being outstanding classic RPGs Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny.

In the lieu of recent horrific AAA RPG fails Fallout 76 and Anthem, it seems that The Outer Worlds and Borderlands 3 are the only first-person sci-fi RPGs we can count on in the foreseeable future.

The world of Monarch from The Outer Worlds looks especially enticing.

The Fallout: New Vegas vibes are strong in the above trailer.

The trailer itself is framed as a corporate propaganda piece in the style of 1950s Americana. Even the name of the corporation leading the colonization efforts, Halcyon, means a period of idyllic ascension.

In The Outer Worlds universe, Earth Directorate is the official governing body but, just like in our world, everything is offloaded to colossal corporations like Halcyon.

In the trailer, there is a strong emphasis on the various factions you will be able to join.

The RPG mechanics have not been explicitly revealed in terms of ability trees or character attributes, but they do follow what you can expect from a first-person sci-fi RPG: melee focus, scientist types, precision shooting with time dilation, etc.

As an untamed world run by an unscrupulous corporation, you will definitely need to choose wisely as you fight Monarch’s wild alien fauna, rogue robots, and opposing factions.

According to the publisher Private Division, the release date for The Outer Worlds is sooner than you think — October 25, 2019.
